Chia: The Super-food of The New Age

The gifts of Nature are generous and precious. We have been blessed with different gifts, and one of them is Chia. I am sure you have heard this name already, and in case you are wondering about it, I prepared some basic information you can find useful.

What is Chia?

Chia seeds are edible seeds which come from the desert plant Salvia Hispanica, and for those who have this Latin name sounds familiar, yes there is another Salvia, i.e. Sage, but a different kind of Chia. This plant originates from the ancient Maya and Aztecs, who gave the name chia, which has the meaning: strength. According to legend, the ancient South American peoples used these seeds to give them super energy.

Chia seeds aren’t processed, which means that they are natural, and the body absorbs them naturally. Two teaspoons of chia contains 139 calories, 4 g. protein, 9 g. fat, 12 g. carbohydrates and 11 g. dietary fiber. Besides that, chia seeds contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and calcium. The taste is kinda nutty, and can be eaten fresh as they come from the nature. The best way to consume them is in addition to meals, especially in salads, cereals and shakes. Also, you can add them to rice dishes, sauces and for baking bread or cakes. Chia seeds can be mixed with water or milk to get a chia pudding. For more chia seed recipes Click Here!

Can Chia help you lose weight?

There are many diets with chia, and the idea behind them is that chia seeds are spread in the stomach, which automatically fills you up and you eat less. But studies have shown that after 12 weeks of using chia seeds in the diet, no change in appetite or weight was detected in the respondents. What they were improved in, were their cholesterol levels, feelings of happiness and energy levels.

Also, it is good to use chia in any diet because it helps with hunger. Maybe it doesn't affect the appetite, but it helps to stay away from feeling hungry, and at the same time to avoid additional calories. These Seeds were converted to gel when they come in contact with water, and thus increase their volume by 2 to 3 times. So, enough is 1 teaspoon of chia seeds and a little water to get 150 grams of chia pudding (the small cup fruit yogurt).

As a perfect combination of soluble and insoluble fiber, easily absorbs unnecessary sugars from food. Also chia seeds are an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, calcium and minerals.

The recommended dose is 2 times a day - 20 grams of chia seeds, prepared in any way. No doubt it will make a big improvement in your health. It is available online, via the internet super-foods shops, and can also be found in all of the healthy food stores. Again, a good and simple thing, given to us from Nature – make use of it.
